The park also has historical significance because it was the first place that English colonists in North America set foot on the continent. Travel to another era at False Cape State Park. False Cape got its nickname from sailors who would mistake it for Cape Henry, which is located about 20 miles north at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Ships and boats looking for Cape Henry often sailed into the shallow waters at False Cape, where they could easily run aground.
Visitors to False Cape can explore the abandoned community of Walsh Woods. This settlement was developed by survivors of such an event in the 17th or early 18th century. The village's church and other structures were even built using timber that washed ashore from a shipwreck.
