National Parks and State Parks near Key West

There’s no small number of parks in Key West, and at any one of them you’re guaranteed to have breathtaking views and an incredible day under the sun. From historical forts to underwater snorkeling, Key West is bursting with flora, fauna, and everything in between. Dry Tortugas National Park Not only a National Park, Dry Tortugas is one of Key West’s most popular destinations and it’s not difficult to see why. The small island is so extraordinarily picturesque, it’s as if you’ve stepped back in time on a deserted Caribbean hiding spot, complete with a grand hexagonal fort and moat in remarkable condition. Accessible only by plane or ferry, the National Park is a dream come true for those that search for the clearest, bluest waters to snorkel and swim in within the United States. Visitors can camp overnight in tents or just stay for the day, but no matter how long your visit is, one thing is certain–– you’ll never want to leave! John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Amongst the numerous beaches and parks in the Keys, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a must-visit for its incredible snorkeling opportunities. The State Park is located in Key Largo, just off the coast of mainland Florida, and is famous for its glass-bottom boat tours of its aquatic life. In addition to the vibrant coral reef that draws thousands to its shores, the park also has incredible walking trails through mangrove lagoons and stretches of marshy grasslands. Swim, snorkel, boat, or rent a kayak/canoe and spend the day in nature at one of Key West’s most beautiful places.

Key West Attractions

At Key West, there are endless possibilities for things to see and do: just listing every water sport and activity could take a lifetime (jetskiing, parasailing, and cruises, just to name a few). Spread out across the Keys are farmer’s markets, State Parks, and even places where you can swim with dolphins! Fort Zachary Taylor State Park If you don’t have time to ferry to Dry Tortugas, then Fort Zachary Taylor State Park on Key West makes for another amazing day trip. The white sand beach at the park is heavenly, quintessential Florida Keys real estate, so much so that it’s called Paradise Beach. Set dramatically against the crystal clear water, Fort Zachary Taylor itself is in stark contrast with its rust-colored hues that stretch out into the water like a jetty. Inside the fort are original cannons beneath well-preserved brick archways and a maze of historic halls that you can walk through. With such exquisite views, it’s no surprise that weddings are often held on the perfect beaches of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, underneath its many palm trees. Key West Artisan Market For local food and artisanal crafts, head to Key West Farmer’s Market and Key West Artisan Market on Sundays from November to April at Higg’s Beach. At the artisan market, there are dozens of stalls with homemade soaps, body scrubs, jams, clothing, and so much more. Live music accompanies you as you spend your day living like a local and giving back to the people of Key West. Swim with Dolphins Among the eco-tours offered in Key West, there are some that offer you the opportunity to see dolphins up close and personal in a private snorkeling excursion! Plus, it’s not just dolphins that frequent these turquoise waters—sea turtles and eagle rays have been known to show up on tours too! Food and drinks are included on this day trip, so all you have to do is bring your family to the catamaran and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience together.
