The gateway to the Grand Teton wilderness, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is an extraordinary cradle of American nature and history. To tread its soaring mountains and peaceful, windswept valleys either by foot or by horseback is to participate in a timeless exploration of the Western frontier. With nature on all sides, and a central town that welcomes thousands of visitors each year with open arms and a number of annual festivals, there’s no shortage of reasons to keep returning to Jackson.
Campgrounds and RV Parks near Jackson Hole
When the scenery surrounding the town that you’re RVing in is as breathtaking as Jackson Hole, any park that you choose to camp in will make for an amazing experience. Fortunately, Jackson is one of the most popular RV destinations in the US, and for good reason.
For the convenience of location, the Virginian RV Park is well appointed with easy access to both downtown Jackson and Grand Teton National Park. This pet friendly park is Old West-themed and supports electric 30/20/15 and 50 amp, with showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities for guests. Each individual site comes with a picnic table, and guests are welcome to the pool, hot tub, and restaurant on premises, but perhaps most special of all is the gorgeous mountain view that surrounds the camp.
North of Jackson in the Kelly region, the Gros Ventre Campground is ideal for RVers looking to camp in nature itself. At Gros Ventre, the emphasis is on nature first, which is why although the roads are paved and the camp supports full electric hookups, there is a decidedly rustic feel to the sites. For this reason, the campgrounds offer restrooms for guests but not showers or any of the other luxuries that come with glamping. Gros Ventre is for people looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of Grand Teton itself, and who won’t settle for anything less.
Tucked nearby the rushing blue waters of Snake River, Snake River Cabins & RV Village is a popular getaway for families looking to camp in nature— with amenities too! In addition to basic amenities like bathrooms, showers, and laundry, the camp also offers a general store on-site, community fire rings, and packages that include horseback riding and white water rafting! Snake River Cabins & RV Village is pet friendly and located to the south of Jackson by a 10 minute car ride.
National Parks and State Parks near Jackson Hole
Although Yellowstone National Park further North may receive the lion’s share of popular glory, Grand Teton is every bit as awe-inspiring for its beauty and natural splendor.
To the north of Jackson is the incredible Grand Teton National Park. Grand Teton’s snow-capped mountains are famously reflected by the crystal clear water of its lakes. Its sprawling green meadows are roamed by bison, grizzly bears, elk, and moose. The miles of trails along the peaks and valleys of the National Park have been crossed by hundreds of thousands of people in their pilgrimage to explore the American wild. Grand Teton is a once in a lifetime destination to explore, and no amount of words can properly do it justice.
Jackson Hole Attractions
Jackson Hole is nothing short of a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, but it’s also a midwestern gateway to the past for visitors.
Besides the towering Grand Teton National Park to the north of Jackson, the region of Jackson Hole consists of several mountain peaks and valleys to keep visitors busy (and in shape) during their stay. Notable trails include: Cascade Canyon, Jenny Lake Loop, Phelps Lake Loop, and Teton Crest Trail.
Also known as Mormon Row, Antelope Flats is the name given to a scenic loop of plains in the Kelly area. Driving across the Flats is a great way to take in the landscape and history of Wyoming (and to give yourself a break from all the hiking). On this route, visitors can see Mormon Row, a historic stretch of frontier barns and cabins built by homesteaders in the early 1900s.
The famous Jackson Hole Rodeo is set against a backdrop of mountain ranges, out in the open air. On weekends and select days from June-August, visitors can watch (or compete themselves) as professionals compete in bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping, and team roping. As the Rodeo likes to put it, Jackson Hole is “where the west is still wild!”
Events in Jackson Hole
The towns in the area of Jackson Hole are anything but sleepy. All throughout the year, the region is home to annual festivals and fairs celebrating Western culture.
One of the most popular times to visit Jackson is during late May for its famous Old West Days. This weeklong event is a celebration of Wyoming’s rich Western history, and as such is incredible to attend for lovers of the time period. Each day has different activities, such as bow and arrow or hawk and knife competitions, Western-style chuckwagon dinners, a horse-drawn parade with covered wagons, stage coach rides, and so much more. Vendors line selling authentic Western-style crafts line the fairgrounds, and there’s even the famous Jackson Hole Shootout on the town square (the longest running shootout in the country).
Jackson also celebrates the summer each year with the Teton County Fair. During the last week in July, the fairgrounds are transformed to include dozens of neon-lit carnival rides and games. Also on the fairgrounds is the Jackson Hole Rodeo, so that lucky visitors during this week can experience both the annual carnival as well as its famous rodeo shows.
Each year throughout select weekends in September, the town of Jackson participates in the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Fest. During the festival, tickets can be purchased for a number of different pop-up exhibits, including the Western Design Conference Open Preview Party + Fashion Show and a silent film accompanied by a live orchestra. Additionally, art galleries work with participating restaurants to present an evening of fine art and dining for guests.
