Folly Beach County Park

Haunted Old City Jail
For any lovers of the supernatural (or fans of the shows Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, and Buzzfeed Unsolved), taking a ghost tour of the Old City Jail is an absolute must. There are plenty of haunted mansion and ship tours throughout Charleston, but the Old City Jail’s spooky architecture and eccentric cast of undead characters (including 19th century pirates and Civil War prisoners) makes it the best spot to spend the night out searching for ghosts. But, even if you don’t see any, the history lessons provided in the nighttime tours are interesting enough to keep everyone happy.
Events in Charleston
As with Charleston’s attractions, there are so many events in the city throughout the year that it will be difficult picking one exact time to go! Immerse yourself in Southern culture with Charleston’s beach parties, food festivals, and charming shopping districts.
Attend Charleston Wine + Food Festival
For lovers of fine wine and dining, Charleston’s Wine + Food Festival in March is not to be missed. Hundreds of people flock to the city each year to dine beneath the swaying Spanish moss of the live oak trees and try the local wines. Pavilions are set up and fairy lights line the trees to delight people, as if the food isn’t already delightful enough. Wine + Food Festival is not to be confused with Charleston Restaurant Week, which takes place in the fall and gives visitors a chance to choose from prix fixe menus. For the foodies out there, it’s an impossible choice.
Charleston Water Week
In early September, Charleston’s beaches, rivers, creeks, and lakes are celebrated as summer winds down for one last week long party. There are so many activities to partake in that it’s difficult to list even a few; there’s scuba diving, dragon boat racing, surfing, parasailing, yachting, water polo, cable skiing, bodyboarding— even underwater hockey! And those are just some of the fun things to do in Charleston during Water Week at any of its 21 water venues!
SHOP 2nd Sunday
Every second Sunday of each month, the shopping district of King Street closes down for cars to allow the livelihood of the area to expand into the streets. Outdoor live music often plays as people shop and mingle, and a number of interesting exhibits have popped up on King Street over the years, including, most recently, a recreation of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel!
Even if shopping isn’t for you, it’s still a relaxing way to spend the day with your friends or family, going for a walk outdoors in the city and taking in the crowds and window displays.
