Are you going stir crazy from being in the house for so long? It feels like an eternity since I have been out and feeling the warm sun and gentle breeze against my skin. Let’s go on an RV Day Trip and escape San Antonio. This Road Trip may even last more than a day and stretch into a week-long excursion. With so many sights and natural destinations around Texas withing a day’s drive, we will have plenty to see. If we want to get some ocean then we could go down to Corpus Christi or, Rockport or maybe head East to Del Rio for something different.

Packing to Escape San Antonio

The first thing to think about is What to Pack for our escape from San Antonio. Like any other trip the items you pack are determined by your destination and length of stay. Boondocking around San Antonio

Boondocking, AKA dry camping, or rough camping or wild camping is simply camping without electricity, water, or sewer hookups. Some campgrounds offer RV hook-ups, and others don’t, and there are times when you aren’t able to find a designated camping site open or want to just find a spot and camp with your RV. That is when you “Boondock” it. This makes the whole RV trip a little more adventurous without all of the “roughing it”. Just take the necessary precautions for safety and possible weather changes.

Great Destinations Within a Day's Drive of San Antonio Texas

One place to have on the list of Destinations for your Escape from San Antonio Road Trip is Canyon Lake, about a 45 minute drive to the north. There is a fantastic place to catch the sunset at Overlook Park. If you are interested in scuba diving, there is that option with Canyon Lake Divers. In the same general area is San Marcos, a 50 minute drive to the Northeast. What a great way to beat the heat than to ride a tube down the San Marcos River? After that drop in to Treff’s Tavern for a hot meal and a wide selection of cold beer. To the Northwest is Lost Maples State Natural Area, in Vanderpool. This is the spot for Boondocking and getting away from noisy neighbors and, unplugging from the daily grind. A little bit further out and to the Southwest is Loredo. Visit Lake Casa Blanca and do some fishing. There is plenty of Bass ready to be caught. When you drive your RV into town, you may be hungry, one place with remarkable Tex-Mex is El Meson de San Augustine. Ask for the Chili Relleno. You won’t regret it. To make a full circle, stop by Port Aransas which is about 2 hours Southeast. It’s on the beach with some great seafood and wet your whistle at one of the many bars like Shorty’s Place, possibly the best dive bar in Texas. If you haven’t been to the Devil’s Sinkhole in Rocksprings, then definitely add this to your trip. It is home to one of the largest colonies of bats. In the same vicinity is Port Isabel Lighthouse on South Padre Island. It is one of the lighthouses that were originally built on the Texas coast. Corpus Christi is a must have for this RV Road Trip. Drive down I-37 and make a left right before hitting the ocean and you’re there. Plenty of history here from seeing the USS Lexington aircraft carrier to the Museum of Asian Cultures and the Museum of Science and History. Look at hundreds of species of fish and aquatic mammals at the Texas State Aquarium. If you’re want to get your adrenaline pumping, then you may want to take in some surfing, parasailing, kite boarding and kayaking as options to quench your adrenaline’s thirst.
