National and State Parks Near Durham, NC

You cannot go to Durham and miss out on some of the beautiful National and State Parks. Locations like Eno River State Park are both great parks for hiking and camping. Not every park has an RV-accessible campground so it is always nice to find a location that offers it. If you want to camp in some of the areas listed before, you may be able to do so.

Eno River State Park

Eno River flows near urban areas of Durham and Orange counties with five scattered State Park access areas, each just minutes from town. The Eno River’s waters roll past mature forests, historic mill and home sites, and river bluffs covered with flowering shrubs and across fords used by early settlers.

The park offers nearly 30 miles of trails along a swift, shallow stream that’s popular with anglers, photographers, and sightseers. Backcountry camping at individual sites and group campsites is available but all equipment must be carried in. Canoeing and kayaking are permitted but sometimes difficult due to shallow water.

The Beaverdam access offers a network of mountain biking trails as well as a separate and quiet lake impoundment perfect for paddling, fishing, and swimming. The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail winds through parts of the recreation area and is a centerpiece of a network of hiking trails.

William B. Umstead State Park

Hikers, trail runners, bicyclists, and equestrians cherish the extensive network of hiking and multi-use trails at William B. Umstead State Park. Trailheads on both sides of the park—accessible from Interstate 40 and US 70—surround three manmade lakes. The largest is Big Lake, offering canoe and rowboat rentals. Fishing is welcome at all the lakes and connecting tributaries. At both access areas, picnic grounds surround shelters with fireplaces that can be reserved.

For organizations and nonprofit groups, primitive group campsites are available as well as two group camps with cabins, mess halls, and washhouses. Historic Maple Hill Lodge can be reserved for overnight group gatherings. A tent campground is open during the summer months.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens has been serving the Duke and Durham communities for more than 80 years. The idea of a public garden arose in the early 1930s, due to the vision and enthusiasm of Dr. Frederic M. Hanes, an early member of the original faculty of Duke Medical School.

Since that time, Sarah P. Duke Gardens has developed dramatically and beautifully. It now features four distinct areas: the original Terraces and their immediate surroundings, known as the Historic Gardens, including the Mary Duke Biddle Rose Garden and historic Roney Fountain; the H.L. Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, a representation of the flora of the southeastern United States; the W.L. Museum of Life and Science

The Museum of Life and Science is an 84-acre science museum located in Durham, North Carolina. The museum is in the Northgate Park neighborhood. The main building is located on the north tract, along with the Butterfly House, Hideaway Woods, Farmyard, Sprout Cafe, Explore the Wild nature park, Catch the Wind, Dinosaur Trail, and the narrow-gauge Ellerbe Creek C.P.
